NECK LUMPS
Finding a lump in the neck is understandably worrying. The possible causes are wide-ranging, and every neck lump deserves early, accurate assessment — both to identify the underlying cause and to allow treatment to start promptly. WHAT CAN CAUSE A LUMP IN THE NECK?
A lump in the neck may develop for a number of different reasons. Often, neck lumps arise from the thyroid gland, the parotid gland or the submandibular gland, but enlarged lymph nodes, cysts and fatty lumps are other common causes. Lymph nodes may become enlarged in response to infection — but occasionally a malignant process is responsible, which is why prompt assessment matters. Cysts, such as a branchial cyst or a thyroglossal duct cyst, are typically present from birth but may only become noticeable in adulthood.
WHEN TO SEEK URGENT ASSESSMENT
Any lump with the following features should be checked on an urgent basis:

A lump that has been present for more than three weeks

A lump that is growing, feels hard, or doesn't move freely under the skin

Associated hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, unexplained weight loss, or a persistent sore throat
These symptoms don't automatically indicate cancer, but they should checked urgently. Mr Dale can arrange rapid assessment privately without waiting for a GP referral.
HOW A NECK LUMP IS ASSESSED?
A first appointment includes a detailed history and examination, including a fibreoptic assessment of the nose and throat (nasal endoscopy). Depending on the nature of the lump a scan may be required (ultrasound, MRI or CT). In some circumstances this is arranged on the same day. If needed, a fine needle aspiration (a small needle sample of cells) is taken during the scan for analysis. The results of the scans and biopsies will allow treatment to be planned.
