Mr Oliver Dale
BMBS BSc FRCS PhD

Consultant ENT, Head & Neck and Thyroid Surgeon

I am a Consultant ENT, Head & Neck and Thyroid Surgeon at University Hospitals Bristol. I treat a full range of ear, nose and throat problems in adults and children. I have a specialist practice in head and neck surgery, which includes the treatment of neck and thyroid lumps, as well as voice and swallowing problems, throat cancer and salivary gland disorders.

I also have a special interest in the treatment of nose and sinus problems, including endoscopic sinus surgery for sinusitis, and septoplasty and turbinate surgery for nasal blockage.

I completed my specialist training in ENT surgery in Bristol and Oxford, before undertaking an international fellowship in Australia, where I had the opportunity to work with world leading experts in the field of advanced head & neck cancer and robotic surgery.

I am a core member of the Head & Neck and Thyroid Multidisciplinary Team at University Hospitals Bristol, which provides rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment for people with thyroid and head and neck cancer. I also work closely with the Neurosurgical team at Southmead Hospital in Bristol to treat adults and children with tumours of the nose, sinuses and skull base.

I have a strong interest in research, and was awarded a PhD for my work into head & neck cancer biology in 2016. I have presented my research at national and international meetings, and in 2015 was awarded the scientific prize at the annual meeting of the British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists. A full list of my published research is available on my ORCID profile.

I am actively involved in clinical trials at University Hospitals Bristol. I am the local PI (Primary Investigator) for the HoT trial and have been involved in the recruitment of patients for the PATHOS and PET-NECK II trials. I have received national awards including the Margaret Witt Scholarship for clinical excellence and the Modi Surgical Research Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons.

As part of my role as a consultant ENT surgeon, I work closely with colleagues in speech and language therapy, dietetics, audiology, paediatrics and anaesthetics to provide a multidisciplinary approach the care of my patients.

I am an Educational and Clinical supervisor for ENT surgical trainees at University Hospitals Bristol. I am also involved in medical education at a more junior level, and authored the ear, nose and throat component of the undergraduate medical syllabus for students at the University of Bristol.

I work at University Hospitals Bristol, which includes St Michael’s Hospital, The Bristol Royal Infirmary, the Bristol Children’s Hospital and the Spire Hospital in Bristol.
